Community History

The Little Red School Community was started by us, John and Jackie Leahy. When we purchased this farm land, with the idea of developing a 55 and older community, we were mystified as to what to name the community. In researching the land we discovered the green house on the property was originally a little "red" one-room school house. A gentleman had written an article about going to school here and had actually drawn a picture of the schoolhouse as it originally was. We have built a replica of that school to house the water works and the office. (See the photo at left.)

There were trolley tracks from Oneonta through this farm. We now use that area as a nature walking path. It also leads to a great fishing hole!

Another part of the history of this land is the barn that was located near Rt.11. John and I are "barn people", therefore we didn't want to tear the barn down even though we didn't have a use for it. We called the Farmer's Museum in Cooperstown and asked them if they would like a barn for the museum. They came to look at it and were very excited, as it was a king post construction barn. They came and took it down piece by piece and moved it to the museum. Under the barn was an old foundation which they thought might have been part of the underground railroad.
